National park is an area which is strictly reserved for the betterment of the wildlife & biodiversity, and where activities like developmental, forestry, poaching, hunting and grazing on cultivation are not permitted. Their boundaries are well marked and circumscribed.

North Button Island National Park is a beautiful place, located in the Andaman district of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Union territory) of India. North Button Island National Park was established in the year of 1987. Total area of the park is 0.44 Km2.

The North Button Island National Park forest area is a home for different species of plants, trees, birds and wild animals etc. The park is home to many creatures such as the dugong and the dolphin.

South Button Island National Park and Middle Button Island National Park are also located near the North Button Island Park. The district headquarters of the island are located at a distance of 60 kilometers from the Park. The other places of interest around the park include Barren Island 60 kilometers from the Park, Marine National Park that lies to the west of Port Blair and Long Island.

The nearest town to the park is Long Island, distanced at 60 kilometers. One can hire a boat service to reach the North Button Island National Park from the Long Island.

The island is surrounded by deep and blue waters of the Bay of Bengal. The coastal cities of Chennai, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam are connected by the island, through water transportation.

Geography

North Button Island National Park is located in the Andaman district of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Union territory) of India. Total area of the park is 0.44 Km2. This national park is geographically located north east of Port Blair city in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

South Button Island National Park and Middle Button Island National Park are also located near the North Button Island Park. The district headquarters of the island are located at a distance of 60 kilometers from the Park. The other places of interest around the park include Barren Island 60 kilometers from the Park, Marine National Park that lies to the west of Port Blair and Long Island.

The island is surrounded by deep and blue waters of the Bay of Bengal. The North Button Island National Park area is surrounded by coral-covered boulders and ridges interspersed with sandy patches in the sea water with clear visibility is a best scuba diving and snorkeling spot for tourists.

This park area falls in the humid, warm and wet tropical climate zone. This park is covered by wet tropical forests. Most of the park area is covered with deciduous forest.

Special climatic conditions of this region provide a typical climate throughout the year.  Though any tropical or continental climate do not exists here. From Jun to October is the time for heavy and continuous rainy season.

Caryota Mitis, Dinochloa Andamanica, Salmalia Insignis, Calophyllum Soulattri, Calamus palustris, Calophyllum soulattri, Parishia insignis, Dinochloa andamanica, Hopea odorata, Artocarpus gomeziana, Artocarpus chaplasha, Dipterocarpus grandiflorus, Aprosa villosula, Canarium manii, Endospermum chinensis, Calamus palustris, Sideroxylon sp., Artocarpus gomeziana, Parishia insignis, Baccaurea sapida, Dipterocarpus pilosus, Salmalia insignis etc.

Dominant fauna

Spotted deer, Blue whale, Monitor lizard, Dolphins, Water monitor lizards, Turtles, Dugongs etc. Many species of colorful Coral species are also found in the park.

Fishes found in the park area include reef fish, unicorn fish, tunas, trevallies and giant groupers etc.

Marine fauna found in this park include Humpback Snappers, Giant Groupers, and schools of Spiny foot and Unicorn fish, Boulder Corals, Stag horns, Coral Laminates and Finger Corals.

Best time to visit

North Button Island National Park is open throughout the year. The best time of the year to visit the North Button Island National Park is between the months of December to March.

Visitors can reach the North Button Island National Park through ferries from Port Blair, capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Union Territory.

How to Reach

By AirNearest airport is Port Blair airport, from the North Button Island National Park. Port Blair is well connected with Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai Airport as well as through Ships.

By Rail – There is no railway station in Andaman archipelago. Nearest railway station is Chennai Railway Station in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu, which is about 1,370 away from the park.

By Road The North Button Island National Park is not connected by roads. Visitors can reach the park through ferries provided by authorities from Port Blair.
