Description

Ganoderma lucidum is a fungi species, upto 30 cm in size. The visible part of the Ganoderma lucidum is fruiting body. The cap-like structure is called the pileus and its stem is referred as the stipe. When young, its varnished surface is red, bright yellow and white. Later the white and yellow shades disappear, but the resulting varnished, reddish to reddish brown surface is still quite beautiful and distinctive.

Ganoderma lucidum commonly grows at the base and stumps of deciduous trees. The reishi mushroom is a purplish-brown fungus with a long stalk (some time absent), corky and flat, with a conspicuous red-varnished, kidney-shaped cap with a shiny and depending on specimen age, white to dull brown pores underneath and varnish-coated appearance.

Stem are present, (but some time absent) 3-15 cm long, upto 4 cm thick, twisted, equal or irregular, varnished and colored like the cap, often distinctively angled away from one side of the cap. Flesh is brownish, fairly soft when young, but soon tough.

Reishi mushroom is a saprophytic fungus that tends to grow more prolifically in warm climates on decaying hardwood logs and stumps. Reishi mushroom also grows on decaying wood or tree stumps.
