Total area of the park is about 14.59 Km2. The park is officially declared as a National park in the year of 1994. The most important attraction of this park is the endangered blackbucks. The vegetation in the park ranges from dry deciduous to grasslands. The topography of park supports dry deciduous, forests, grasslands, scrub land, rocky landscapes and tropical forests. The park looks picturesque in the monsoon with the golden and white flowers of these trees on the lush green carpet of grass.
National park is an area which is strictly reserved for the betterment of the wildlife & biodiversity, and where activities like developmental, forestry, poaching, hunting and grazing on cultivation are not permitted. Their boundaries are well marked and circumscribed.

Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park

Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park is beautiful place, and also a home to the Blackbuck. The park also known as Deer park and Mahavir Harina Vanasthali Wildlife Park. Blackbuck is the state animal of Andhra Pradesh.

The Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park is located at Vanasthalipuram on the outskirts of Hyderabad district of the state of Andhra Pradesh (Move to Telangana). Total area of the park is about 14.59 Km2.

In past, the park is a property of the Nizam of Hyderabad, now it is managed by the Forest Department of Andhra Pradesh (Move to Telangana).

The national park got its name in 1975 in commemoration of the 2500th birth anniversary of the great Jain saint, Lord Mahavira. The park is officially declared as a National park in 1994.

The vegetation in the park ranges from dry deciduous to grasslands. The topography of park supports dry deciduous forests, grasslands, scrub land, rocky landscapes and tropical forests.

The sanctuary has many prominent and exotic plant species such as teak, sandal wood and flame of the forest. During monsoons, the park appears spellbinding with various kinds of colorful flowers flowering all around.

The most important attraction of this park is the endangered blackbucks. The park has been estimated to consist of about 400 deer. Besides the Black Bucks there are also several species of other animals and birds such as Cheetahs, Mongooses, Monitor Lizards, Porcupines, short-toed eagles, Indian pond herons, porcupines, water monitors, kingfishers, cormorants and several other bird species.

The Park also has a Safari or rather a bus ride and we will get permission to get down from the bus and take some photos also. The park also has a butterfly garden and during this season, we should be able to capture some pictures of them.

The park looks picturesque in the monsoon with the golden and white flowers of these trees on the lush green carpet of grass.

Visitors can view the animals via sheds and viewing towers. There are facilities available for a van ride inside the park to see the animals from close quarters for a nominal fee.

The forest Department offers audio-visual education on nature and wildlife and is supported by a good nature library. There is also an exhibition hall where one can learn about wildlife conservation.

Sandalwood, Rosewood, Teak, Ber, Accacias, Terminalias, Palas, Amaltas, Albizzias, Accacias, Neem, Bauhinias, Buteas etc.

Dominant fauna

Panther, Black Buck, Cheetal, Wild Boar, Civet, Porcupine, Peacock, Monitor lizard, Partridges, Quails, Doves, Pond herons, Egrets, kingfisher, kites, Vultures, Mongooses, Woodpecker etc.

The park also has an exhibition hall where you can learn more about wildlife conservation and an audio-visual on wildlife along with an informative library.

Visitors can also enjoy facilities of the Environmental Education Centre built to impart Nature Education and enjoy their nature trails, camping trips, safari drives and visits to the many water bodies to watch aquatic life at play.

Best Time to Park Safari

The park can be visited at any time of the year. The park is open on all days except Mondays from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM.

Tourists visiting the park have a lot of options like viewing the animals through sheds or watch towers. There are many viewing towers here that also encourage sightseeing.
