Gangotri National Park is a beautiful place, located in the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttarakhand. It was established as National Park in the year of 1989. Total area of the park is about 2390.02 Km2.

The Park is named after Gangotri, which is famous as one of the four pilgrim sites (Char Dhams). This Park is a vital link between Kedarnath National Park and Govind National Park.

The park provides majestic beauty of coniferous forests and grandeur of glacial world combined with lush green meadows.

The park is a home to species like Blue sheep, Black bear, Tiger, Brown bear, Himalayan thar, Musk deer, Snow leopard etc.

The park also provide suitable habitat to bird species like Himalayan Monal, Bulbul, Doves, Himalayan Barbet, Parakeet, Partridges, Pheasants, Pigeons etc.

Geography

Gangotri National Park is located in the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttarakhand. Total area of the park is about 2390.02 Km2.

The northeastern boundary of Gangotri National Park is along the international boundary with China. This park comes under geographical limits of Biographical zone 2A of West Himalaya and full of various springs, waterfalls and snowy mountain peaks.

Gangotri National Park has typical high altitude ecosystem, physically and biologically influenced by the trans-Himalayan elements to greater extent.

In the lower elevation of the park we can see Western Himalayan Subalpine Conifer Forest and on the higher elevation we find Western Himalayan Alpine Shrub and Meadows. Chirpine, deodar, fir, spruce, oak and rhododendron are the common vegetation in Gangotri National Park.

The Gangotri National Park falls under the bio geographical zone and is located at an altitude of 1,800m to 7,083 metres above sea level. The landscape of the park is mainly dominated by alpine scrub, although one can also find oak and betula as well.

The area from Gangotri to Gaumukh is interspersed with landslides that have created an irreversible isolation and trees and shrubs are seen in patches.

The vast landscape is full of grassy areas, though some clubbed areas of Kharsu and Betula trees are also grown up at various height levels of this area.

The route to the Gomukh is sided by the hilly mountains and is very steep.  At some places the route is disturbed by the dangerous landslides. The reason of the landslides in this area is only due to excavation of trees and is impossible to recover the loss as the core of the land has disturbed due to uprooting and extensive soil erosion by the rain.

Summer are pleasing with calm weather. Most tourists prefer to visit Gangotri National park during the summer months April, May and June. The climatic condition favors trekking and sightseeing.

Geographical coordinates of this national park are 78°45’ to 79°02’ East and 30°50’ to 31°12’ North.

Dominant flora

Western Himalayan sub-alpine conifer forests are found at lower ranges of the park. At the higher elevations meadows and Western Himalayan alpine shrub are more common. Spruce, deodar, chirpine, rhododendrons, oak and fir trees are found in great numbers in this park. Alpine scrub is the unique feature of the park.

Vegetation consist of chirpine deodar, Fir, Spruce, Ock, and Rhododendrons etc.

Dominant fauna
