The Campbell Bay National Park has a sprawling vegetation of tropical and mangrove forests. The national park is located in the Great Nicobar Island of the archipelago.

The Campbell Bay National Park has beautiful variety of the orchids and various flowering plants. During the spring season this area looks as awesome as all the flowering plants of this area are in full blossom.

Thick tropical evergreen forests and tree ferns dominate the landscape with beautiful orchids for a wonderful photography experience. Mangrove forests have their unique ecosystems which add to the rich ecosystem of the national park.

The vegetation of this park includes the tropical evergreen forest, orchids, and tree fern. There are also various types of animals that are found in the national park like Nicobar pigeon, megopode, giant robber crab and crab eating macaque.

There is the provision of the watch towers in the forest for the travelers from where they can watch various species of birds.

History

The islands of Andaman and Nicobar have been recorded by the Arab merchants in the 9thcentury while on their way to trade in Sumatra.

Later Lieutenant Archibald Blair established a penal settlement on these Islands during 18th Century C.E. The British government handed over the Andaman archipelago to the Indian government after the Independence.

The island had a formidable reputation as the inhabitants greeted the outsiders with bows and arrows. In the year of 1789, Lieutenant Archibald Blair established a permanent settlement on the islands. The Danes too established their sway on the islands for a short while.

The place became known for the infamous Cellular jail where freedom fighters were exiled to and came to be referred as Kala Pani. The Japanese occupied the islands for a short time during the Second World War and later was captured by the British and handed over to the Indian government after independence.

Campbell Bay Park is situated on the largest island the Great Nicobar that is the largest island of the Nicobar Islands on the east of the Indian Ocean and about 190 km towards the north of Sumatra.

The summer season of the Nicobar region starts from the end of the month of January and lasts up to end of June. Normally on an average the temperature during summer ranges from 20°C to 31°C along with some and some critical storms that hits the city during summers.

Dominant flora

The vegetation cover of the Campbell Bay National Park comprises mostly of tropical evergreen forest. The park has a wide variety of bravura orchids, tree ferns and several colorful and rare flowering plants.

Elaeocarpus gangestrus, Malinkara litoris, Sterculia alata, Ipomea spp., Pandanus tinctoria Ficus, Terminallia, Casaurina sp., Nipa Palm, Albizia procera, Canarium euphyllum, Callophyllum spp., Syzizium Cuminii, Rhizophora spp., Brugeria spp. Ceriops tagal, Canes c tree fern, Ground orchid etc.

Dominant fauna

Crab eating Macaque, Giant robber crabs, Salt water crocodile, Giant leather back turtle, Malayan box turtle, Nicobar tree shrew, Dear, Reticulated python, Fruit Bat, Andaman Wild pig, Palm Civet, Hawksbill turtles, Leatherback turtles, Oliver Ridley turtles, The Megapode, Nicobar Pigeon, White Bellied Sea Eagle, Nicobar Serpent Eagle etc.

Best time to visit

Campbell Bay National Park is open throughout the year. The best time of the year to visit the Campbell Bay National Park is between the months of March to October.

Visitors can reach the Campbell Bay National Park through ferries from Port Blair. Port Blair is well connected with Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai Airport as well as through Ships.

For international tourists, permission is required to visit Port Blair and other islands.

By SeaFrequent ship services are available for the passengers travelling to Port Blair from Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata, Chennai and back. Passenger ships are available from Chennai, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam to Port Blair. Ferry services are available to the national park.

Accommodation

There are camps and cabins to accommodate the adventurous traveler. Accommodation is generally available in the capital town of Port Blair. The city also houses the airport and various administration offices.

There are resorts in some of the islands like Havelock Islands, Diglipur’s Turtle Resort. Accommodations that suit various budgets are available in Port Blair and there are some private hotels in Havelock Island.
